Variations in the aerial viability associated with variation in morphology of color variants of Serratia marcescens.

چکیده
Serratia marcescens, a nonpathogen, greatly facilitates the general study of airborne bacteria. However, the value of many studies has been lessened by the omission of strain designation which makes comparison of results from different investigators impossible. The presence of variants in S. marcescens strain ATCC 274 used in these studies has been reported previously (Bunting, 1940a, b, 1942; Bunting and Ingraham, 1942). In our laboratory the test variant of this strain exhibited stability of response to atmospheric exposure over a considerable period of time but then began showing aberrant responses to the standard atmosphere test condition. A study of the variants isolated from S. marcescens strain ATCC 274 and their stability and response to atmospheric exposure as airborne particles was made. The essential purpose was to characterize the stable variant in this strain so that constancy of response of the test culture could be assured. The need for standard organisms to be used in the study of airborne bacteria under various conditions of temperature, relative humidity, and aerial disinfection should be evident. Such practice is of long standing in the evaluation of bactericides and antibiotics. The particular organism reported here is not presented as a suggested standard test bacterium but to indicate the variations encountered and their significance within a specifically designated culture when used in studies of airborne bacteria.

Studies on pigmentation of serratia marcescens. III. The characteristics of an orange variant.
The production of color variants of Serratia marcescens by means of ultraviolet light irradiation has been reported by Labrum and Bunting (1953). These variants exhibited several shades of pink, orange, or white pigmentation, and differed markedly from the natural or wild-type red color. Rizki (1954a) demonstrated that several of these pink, orange, and white variants were capable of inducing r...

Chitinase production by newly isolated Serratia marcescens B4A was optimized following Taguchi’sarray methods. Twenty-three bacterial isolates were screened from shrimp culture ponds in the South ofIran. A chitinase-producing bacterium was isolated based on it’s ability to utilize chitin as the sole carbonsource. The isolate designated as B4A, was identified as Serratia marces...
متن کاملSerratia Marcescens, An Opportunistic Gram Negative Infection In Cardiac Valve Surgery
Serratia marcescens (S.M) is a species of gram–negative bacteria in the family enterobacteriaceae. A human pathogen, S. marcescens is involved in nosocomial infections, particularly in urinary tract and wound infections. This report describes a 63 years-old man that referred to hospital with dyspnea FC IV and he underwent cardiac valves replacement surgery with a diagnosis...
متن کاملThe inhibitory effect of a Lactobacillus acidophilus derived biosurfactant on Serratia marcescens biofilm formation
Objective(s):Serratia marcescens is one of the nosocomial pathogen. The ability to form biofilm is an important feature in the pathogenesis of S. marcescens. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-adhesive properties of a biosurfactant isolated from Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, on S. marcescens strains. Materials and Methods: Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, was selected a...
متن کاملBiodegradation of malathion by serratia marcescens isolated from Arvandkenar region, Iran
The global use of pesticides has resulted in the contamination of various ecosystems worldwide. The impact of these pesticides can be reduced through bioremediation. The factors that influence the biodegradation rate include the isolation of efficient bacteria for use in remediation and the determination of optimal biodegradation conditions. In this study, malathion degrading bacteria were isol...
